“Winter” – my first book hangover of 2015

Winter - Marissa MeyerOh my stars, that was wonderful.

After reading almost 30 books in 2015, I’ve finally experienced my first book hangover of the year.  In fact, looking back through my Goodreads, the last true book hangover I’ve had was after reading Passage by Connie Willis back in 2011!

That’s not to say I haven’t read any good books this year – some were fantastic, some less than fantastic – but I’ve always moved on to my next read almost immediately after turning the last page.

With Winter I don’t even want to think about another story.  I need to let the story truly soak in my mind while I sulkily make tea and pout because it’s over.

Winter cover - Marissa MeyerMarissa Meyer crafted a beautiful series and I couldn’t ask for a more spectacular conclusion.  I first read Cinder because I had a $5 off voucher for Kobo and it looked semi-interesting.  I didn’t expect much going into the book, but I came out of it discovering it was one of my favourite books in a long time.  Since then, I devoured Scarlet and Cress, and impatiently waited for Winter to be released.

Winter did not disappoint. At all. It has badassery, genetically engineered soldiers, adorably awkward romance, succinct story lines, and a battle on the fucking moon.

I’ve seen this series dinged for lack of world building, but I strongly disagree.  Sci-fi and fantasy novels (a genre that I love) sometimes overwhelm me with authors explaining every tiny detail in their world (I’m looking at you, Tolkien and Cassandra Clare). I have a clear picture of The Lunar Chronicles universe without massive info dumps about the history of Artemisia or several passages about the architecture of the New Beijing palace.  Yes, some people crave that information, but for me I find it slows a story down, which is why I must profess my love for Marissa Meyer’s writing. She managed to build this universe in my head without me being aware of all the little details I’ve picked up along the way.

And so, I must end this love letter with one of the most relatable quotes I’ve ever come across in a book:

“One should never save cake for later when it can be eaten now.” – Princess Winter

Perfect.
